How ANPR Cameras Work

An ANPR camera will analyse the video feed many times a second, a powerful OCR engine records the plate data, this along with an image of the vehicle number plate, is either, processed in the camera, or passed to a back-office system (BoF) via their video management hardware and onto the relevant system. . 

Using OCR technology, the AI will locate the number plate registration and read the letters or characters of the plate. The image of the number plate and the rest of the overview camera is saved and checked against the database.

  • An ANPR camera will take an image of a vehicle number plate when a car drives by the camera’s view. AI OCR (Optical Character Recognition) engines convert the image into readable data. The plte data can then be used to open a barrier, chrarge for parking etc.

  • ANPR cameras detect more than just number plates, they can calculate and detect several vehicle features. These include average vehicle speeds, make model and colour of a vehicle

  • ANPR cameras can be installed on or in vehicles , these are used generally in traffic or parking enforcement systems.

  • ANPR systems, combined with netwrok input/output devies or”on board” relays can be used to operat barriers, gates from an approved list of vehicle registration plates.
